An interactive guitar toolkit to explore music theory

String Atlas is an interactive guitar practice toolkit that turns music theory into something you can see, hear, and play. Explore scales, CAGED, arpeggios and chords and see them on the fretboard. Choose what you want to learn and see it visually so you can play along and learn while having fun. Create daily practice drills to help you really dig in your new knowledge. Really get to see the relationship between the strings, frets and your hands.

Scales & Modes

See the scales and modes visually laid out so you can really understand their relationship to each other. Get a deeper understanding of how arpeggios, chords fit and even how to play outside of these when you compose your songs and solos.

The CAGED system

See the CAGED system across the fretboard, in any position and learn the patterns that make it work and help you easily create musical phrases.

Chords & Progressions

Build chord progressions with music theory based tools to help you understand their relationships to scales, and how to solo over them. See chord patterns on the fretboard in comping mode to build more creative, colorful progressions.

Backing Tracks

Pick a scale and play along to a backing track with it. As the chords change, the fretboard can highlight target notes that fit the chord as it plays, so you learn to improve your soloing.

Training

Eight training modes, from Find the Note to Cadence ID, test what you see on the neck of the guitar and what you hear. Drills put scales, positions, and arpeggios on the screen with the fretboard or tabs and keep a log of what you practice.

Multiple Tunings

Change the tuning to match your guitar to make it easier to become comfortable in any tuning you want to play with.

Frequently asked questions

Is String Atlas free to use?

Yes, the main fretboard explorer, making backing tracks, and parts of the training and drills are free to use and you don't even need to sign up to do it. If you are logged out or using a free account, your custom tracks and favorite scales will save to your web browser. They may be deleted when you change browsers or with time. There is a Plus account that enables server side saving so you can take your creations to anywhere you can log in, and don't have to worry about keeping pages open. If you want to access the more advanced training and drills, you can sign up for Pro to gain access.

What is the CAGED system?

CAGED is a system that takes the common patterns on the guitar you already know, the C, A, G, E, and D chord shapes, and shows you how to use them as moveable patterns across the neck. The five shapes link together, so once you know where the root is, you can play any major key in those positions. String Atlas will also show you minor shapes and how to find extensions. You will also learn how they can be used as arpeggios when soloing.

Can I use String Atlas on my phone?

String Atlas was built with mobile in mind. You should be able to fully use String Atlas from desktop, tablet or mobile without issue.

Does it support alternate tunings?

Yes. Standard, drop and open tunings are built in and checked by hand. You can also set your own custom tuning, including bass and 7-string guitar. Everything will re-map to the tuning you choose. Custom tunings get less testing than the presets, so if something looks off, just let us know.
